Sandpiper Log – July 2008

NEXT GENERAL MEETING: MONDAY, July 21 @ 11:00 A.M. (There will be a board meeting at 10:00)

Out of fairness, since our current show "What Happens When Women Quit Ironing" features six women artists, the next show “Summer Company" will feature six men artists. In addition to members Jere Ancell, Bob Granzow, and Ken Hansen, Sandpiper Gallery will feature R. Wade Nelson, an art teacher from Thompson Falls, Bob Phinney, a well known Florence, Montana artist, and Waldo Solonar, a Polson artist. Once again, It should be a very good show with high-quality art. The show will run from July 29th through September 6th, with the reception Friday, August 1 from 5-7 P.M. Please come and meet the artists and enjoy the camaraderie. This is one of the perks of gallery membership. . BUT as always—in order for the show to succeed—we will need lots of members’ new art for the members’ wall. Bring your work to the gallery on SATURDAY July 26th, and pick up your current show work at the same time. We will not guarantee that we will be able to hang your work if it is brought in late. Noon on Monday July 28th is the absolute deadline. We have had so many comments about how great the gallery looks and about the quality of the work we have been showing. Keep up the good work and bring in lots of art. Also, it is time to be thinking about next year's shows. If you or anyone you know would like to be featured in one of our shows next year, please let me know. If you see any local or regional artist that you like, also let me know about them and maybe they can be included in next years’ agenda. Mary Kelley, Gallery Director

Minutes (in brief) of the Sandpiper Gallery Members Meeting, June 16, 2008

The Sandpiper Gallery member meeting was called to order by President Joanne Simpson at 11:00 AM Monday, June 16, 2008, at the Gallery. Pat Wallace gave the Treasurer’s Report for the period 5/19/08 to 6/16/08. The wine-tasting event raised $1752.92 in ticket sales, less $691.93 expenses ($669.22 for wine and $22.71 for printing tickets) for a net of $1060.97. Members were informed that Instead of sending “past due” reminders to existing members who have not yet paid, it was decided that July gallery attendants will make phone calls to all who have not paid. We need to know whether the member will be renewing so that the gallery has a relevant membership list available for display privileges, activities and responsibilities. Basic membership is $40 ($50 for couples); associate membership $55; and patron members, $50. Basic level of responsibility to the gallery is to attend once a month; associate is 4 times a year, and patrons have none. Only basic and associate members are allowed to exhibit artwork in the gallery on the member wall. It was voted unanimously to make Pauline Manning a lifetime member of the Gallery. Mary Kelley, Gallery Director, reported Member shows change out the same day as the new show. Mary K. reiterated the need for member participation in keeping the member walls full of available new art. She underlined the fact that there is more member wall space in this new gallery and that all members’ art will be hung. If the table at the rear of the gallery is being used by the gallery attendant, it should be put away at the end of each day. Karen Maurer reported on the art festival preparations and status (approximately 50 artists have reserved booths to date). Pat Wallace offered to look into obtaining more grid wall and a new canopy with sidewalls, since additional display racks will be necessary to maintain a larger member booth area. Nancy Gordon reported on workshops. The small attendee workshops are amenable to the new space, but even medium-sized (more than 5 attendees) workshops are crowded by merchandise, which can be damaged by people and art supplies. The Methodist Church was available for the larger workshop (about a dozen people), although it was necessary to protect the floors with drop-cloths. Other venues will be explored, including the schools. The meeting adjourned at 12:10 PM.

ART FESTIVAL: As this year's art festival coordinator, Karen Maurer is reminding ALL MEMBERS who intend to participate in the Members' Booth to APPLY. And yes, members who desire their own booths should apply before the end of the month as well. "In order to size the member booth appropriately and to get other vendors assigned to their spaces, etc., I need your cooperation in submitting the member applications -- whether for individual booths or participating in the Member Booth. PLEASE fill out the application form you received last month with the newsletter, OR download the Member version of the application form off the website (www.sandpiperartgallery.com) , fill it out and return. There is no "jurying" for Members!!! I look forward to receiving your application. Please call me with any questions." ( 849-5131 ) Thanks!

MEMBER TO MEMBER: A big thank you and a hug go to Don and Sue Williamson, and Jim Simpson for their help with the sandwich boards for the Salish Park Festival. Special thanks go to Margie Hendricks, who spent many hours with the lettering. No money was made, but four Dolack tickets were sold and a good PR presence was shown at the event on June 21 overlooking the city dock. Mary Sale

ODDS AND ENDS:

ATTENDANCE: During the month of June, an average of 30 people visited the gallery each day. This number has increased to over 40 visits per day in July.

HELP WANTED: Does anyone who likes to sew want to cover a few of those chair pads in the storage pads with the tapestry fabric to match the easy chair up front?

CALENDAR CHANGES: We no longer have a calendar chairperson and all of us have to be responsible for the upkeep of the calendar and making sure someone is available to open the gallery. If you have to take your name off the calendar, you are responsible for finding someone to attend on that day. Even if a member immediately signs up for another day, he or she is responsible for finding someone to cover the free day. The “Buddy” system will make this an easier task.

CLERKS: The collapsed pizza boxes in the storage room are to "take home" Bill Boetcher's stained glass stars.
